In the foothills of the Rockies, near Boulder, CO, this private residence emerges from the earth and serves as a threshold to the landscape beyond. By embedding the building into the natural contours of the landscape and providing access on two levels, the lower of which is to be used as storage and a workshop for a carpenter/craftsman. The studio, separate from the living and sleeping quarters, provides a sense of solitude. The sleeping quarters, perched in a loft, aligning with the same datum of the main entry threshold, overlooking the terrain. The “dog-run” opens to both sections of the residence, capitalizing on cross ventilation and providing a strong axial relationship between the landscape and internal spaces. The singular form is wrapped in weathered corrugated metal, continuing into the cave-like “dog-run”. Sliding barn doors on the lower level transform the figure into a monolithic structure embedded within the sloped terrain.
